JLPottery
Hi All, I am a novice potter looking to take my work to the next level. I have always fired my work at a community studio but I recently came across a used kiln for sale. The owner isn't a potter, doesn't know anything about it, and basically stumbled across the kiln. He doesn't even know if it fires. He is only looking for a reasonable offer. Here's what I know: Model JD230 Serial No 102199A 240V single phase 45amps Dynatrol computer Comes with complete furniture kit The small motor underneath is seized up (I'm assuming that is a ventilator motor?). I had my electrician looked at it and he says the wiring and elements look great. It comes with everything shown in the pictures below. I was thinking $200-300 since I can't figure out if it fires until I do the electrical work in my studio space to power it up. I have never purchased a new kiln much less a used one so I don't know what to look for really. Any thoughts or advise is greatly appreciated! Thanks! oldlady
looks good for that price, whatever wiring you have to do. the shelves alone could total that much. get them OFF the top immediately. everyone thinks kilns are strong because they are made of brick. it is SOFTBRICK and you can crumble it in your hands. put a full shelf in the bottom before you fire it. put it on 1/2 inch posts. lots of info here about first kilns, look at as many as you can find. one of our members is an L&L expert. he will answer. neilestrick
That kiln is old, from 1999, but the wall bricks are in great shape. Make sure none of the cracks in the floor go all the way through. Hairline cracks are fine. The controller is old, but a replacement for less than $250 if it dies. If the floor and lid are good to go, $500 or less is a steal!
JLPottery
Thanks for your help! Yes, I made sure the shelves were taken off the kiln and stacked on their side with old blankets in between. And I will check the cracks when I go see it in a few weeks. Thank you both!
