dana
Hi, this is my first post, but I've been reading and learning from all of you for quite some time. My question is about reglazing just part of a pot. There are a few areas on a piece that didn't get glazed (oops) and I'm wondering if I can just reglaze those parts. This is a low fire piece (04). Also I have another piece, a vase that I didn't glaze the bottom because I was using a Crystal glaze that I thought would run (it didn't). So I want to redo the bottom and this is probably a silly question but can I set the vase down upside down on the part that is already glazed. When you put a piece back int kiln does the old glaze remelt?? Thanks for any help you can offer. dana
bciskepottery
1st question: Yes, you can just glaze the parts you missed. 2nd question: No, you cannot fire upside down on the glazed part; the glaze remelts in its entirety when refired. Lucille Oka
Not only will it remelt but the kiln wash will stick to the vase and your vessel will be ruined. Also if you apply glaze to the unglazed areas do not apply too many coats and still leave a guard area on the bottom of the pot just in case the added glaze does run in the firing. Up in Smoke Pottery
If you are have trouble getting the glaze to adhere on the re-glaze, you might need to heat the piece up, either in the kiln, oven, or microwave, to roughly 180-200 degrees F. You may need a hot pad to hold the piece, but he glaze will dry instantly on the piece and and not run during the application.

I used the microwave tip and everything adhered really well. Reglazed and they turned out good. Two pieces have just been saved from the trash!!!
