Best Clay For Pit Firings

Recommended Posts

I'm a newbie at all this, but my question is what type of clay is best for pit firings? I want to create an all black pot from the firings, but I have read several articles about how certain types of clay are "weaker" to use in the pit firings and am now confused which type is best. Any help would be lovely, thanks!

I would suggest a smooth earthenware that could be polished with terra sigilatta.

You can make a terra sig from redart clay. You can seal the smoke in for carbonizing the load in order to get black. Bisque pieces first to ^09.

If you are more interested in the subtle colorations of saggar firing, i.e. firing each piece in an individual saggar, porcelain works well with a ball clay terra sig.
