Can I keep the fresh air valve open during bisque and glaze firing? (Nabertherm Top 80)

Hi Everyone,

I recently got an installed a new Nabertherm Top 80 and just did a first firing to season the kiln elements. The instruction manual shows the pre-set programmes for bisque and glaze firing. It mentions that the fresh air valve needs to be closed manually when it reaches 600 degrees. I don’t recall any manual intervention when I was using a Northern kiln….I’m wondering if I can just leave the valve open if I am away from studio? The fresh air valve is located towards the bottom of the kiln where a small hole is drilled on the bottom with a handle to open/shut it.

Many thanks!
