blueskies Posted April 28, 2023 Report Share Posted April 28, 2023 I'm new to the world of ceramics! I've done some research, but I have a question if anyone can answer it. I'm using Craft Smart Natural Airdry Clay for a project and was wondering if I should spray paint it first or use shellac to set it first? I've tried googling and can't seem to find a clear answer. The reason I'm asking is because air dry clay has no durability or strength. It's not a good medium for anything other than something to sit and look pretty. Callie Beller Diesel Posted May 6, 2023 Report Share Posted May 6, 2023 In addition to what Neil said, air dry clay will still be a bit porous, so if your spray paint requires a smooth surface to work (thinking of some of the metallic effects), you will want to apply some kind of primer or base layer first. Clay17 Posted May 10, 2023 Report Share Posted May 10, 2023 There are two types of shellac, regular shellac and dewaxed shellac. Dewaxed shellac can go over or under and type of finish. Regular shellac should only go over a finish. If you paint shellac on clay then paint over it the paint will peel off.
