Arden Katz
My application for Colbolt Underglaze pencil I apply 3 thick coats of “glazes”on my handmade ceramic-ware, dry thoroughly. Design my flowers on top using carbon paper. Fill in design with more glazes. Apply my Colbolt pencil to give accents on areas of flowers. No clear on top. I use glazes already. Commercial. Fired to appropriate temperature Learned that the application must have a clear on top to be food safe. The co only tested it this way. So upset. I did not know this . Are my pieces food safe with my application? Thank you
neilestrick
Underglazes need to be covered with a durable, food safe glaze in order to be food safe. However if you're only using the underglaze pencil on the outside of the pots then it's okay. It's only an issue if the underglaze is on a surface that comes into contact with food or the mouth, like on a plate or the inside of a bowl or the lip of a mug. It's possible that the underglaze is being taken into the glaze enough to seal it up, but not super likely. You'd have to have it tested by a lab to know for sure.
