grumpykidstudio
HI all! I just got a smaller new kiln that uses NEMA 6-50R plug, and it is not compatible with my old NEM 14-50 recepticle. Is it safe for me to purchase an adaptor for that? best, Grumpy
neilestrick
That would qualify as an extension cord, which is not recommended for kilns. Just change the outlet. Make sure the wiring and breaker are the correct size for the new kiln. The old outlet is a 4 wire system, probably 2 hots, 1 neutral, 1 ground, unless it was a 3 phase system which would be 3 hots and a ground. Either way, with the new plug you'll need two hots and a ground, no neutral. You can either remove the extra wire or just leave it there but tape it off at both ends.
