Re-firing Naked Raku Pots

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this facility so I apologise if this question has been asked previously.

I have returned to pottery after 12 years where I was caring full time and it seems my memory is not serving me well remembering where I left off!

I'm busy making new pots but I have a few Naked Raku pots where the carbon markings have faded over the years so I thought I could use them as tests for saggar firings that I want to experiment with.

My question is: what temperature should I fire them to in my electric kiln to remove the carbon? Or is it more expedient to use my Raku kiln? The pots were made with Scarva Earthstone a UK clay and had 3 coats of burnished slip of the same clay.

I can't seem to find the answer online.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for reading my post,

Jo.

Hi Jo and welcome to the forum! Welcome back to working with clay.

If they have a shine from the burnishing then taking them up to when the kiln gets a red/orange colour in it should do it. (around 700C)  Either kiln should be okay.
