Bandymolar
Hi all, I'm new to firing my own pots so on a voyage of trial and error discovery! I have a Hobbytech 40 kiln which has a kiln sitter. On both occasions I have fired my transparent glazed pots but they have crazed (pinging). I am exploring why but my question is: can I re-fire these pots to cure the crazing (if so, how?)or is there anything else I can do to make them stable, less porous and useable? Min
Hi Bandymolar and welcome to the forum. Crazing is caused by a misfit between the clay and the glaze. The glaze is in tension and has shrunk more than the claybody during cooling. In effect the glaze is too small to fit the clay so it "stretches" and this is what is causing the crazing. If the clay wasn't fired to maturity it might be the cause of your crazing, if not it needs to be corrected by altering either the glaze or the clay. 4 hours ago, Bandymolar said: is there anything else I can do to make them stable, less porous and useable? Which claybody are you using, what did you fire your kiln to and did you use witness cones?
