glazenerd
Yes, I am playing again: nothing new about that. So before I go down this rabbit- hole too far: does anyone use or know about cone04-06 colored porcelain. Got some pieces thrown, will be firing shortly (once). Nerd Not looking for recipes by the way: rather fond of my own. Just curious to know if anyone besides me is using it?

Chris Campbell
Bryan Hopkins is working with porcelains that are translucent at those low temperatures. https://www.hopkinspottery.com/ He had some at NCECA a couple years ago and it was a thrill to see and touch them. I think he also wrote a CM article about it but not sure of the date. I hope he is still playing with it as it was amazing. I tried to get some of the clay from the supplier but I think he was looking for suppliers not individual potters.
glazenerd
Chris: I looked up his bio on his website: he wrote numerous articles, but nothing in cm.
Chris Campbell
I'll have to keep thinking then as I remember seeing an article with images of his fired experiments ... or maybe he was just a part of the article?? You would have sworn the forms were high fired porcelain ... silky smooth and very translucent.
glazenerd
Chris: I coned and threw this into a small bowl: but got the walls too thin and it folded. So I collapsed it and just pulled up a simple cylinder. Got most of the mechanical issues resolved. Need to once fire and see the final data. oldlady
chris, maybe clay times? nerd, how fast can i buy this and from what company?
glazenerd
Lady: It will take me another six months to a year to perfect this body. I am shooting for zero absorption, as well as excellent working properties. Forum rules do not allow me to do business. However, I have a meeting later this month to license a clay company to make it. Perhaps you can do business with them. All I can say at this point. glazenerd
Lady: I have already developed and tested an ADA ( Americans with disability act) clay body. I have thrown up to 2 lbs. with one hand, just to see how easy it was to work with. I noticed sometime awhile back, that several potters had given up throwing or working with clay because of injuries, corporal tunnel or arthritis. Your post reminded me of it for some reason. Big motivation for me to develop a body to keep them in the game. Above that, potters struggle with throwing because of the clay: more than they realize. Clay causes many problems, potters have just come to accept them as the norm. When Ron fires this body, it will come out the same every time. None will be tossed unless there are other issues involved, nothing will crack, or dunt, or shiver. Glazes will fit better, perform better, and once dialed in: not graze. Better stop: I can hear the scoffers hissing from here.
tinbucket
If you haven't read it already, here's an article written by Bryan Hopkins. It gives the surface/basic ideas behind his "low fire porcelain." I have had good results with 60 NZ kaolin and 40 frit 3124 and a pinch (3) vee gum t. Tony Hansen has a recipe for an 03 "porcelain" on his website, digitalfire.com but I found I liked the translucency/surface qualities of mine better https://static1.squarespace.com/static/50ea736ae4b08880418d6c1c/t/53ff5411e4b0516a0c50e326/1409242129781/HopkinsFINAL.pdf

glazenerd
Well Chris: Took me a few weeks to work out the bugs, both in the body and the glaze.. but here it is: Cone 04 colored porcelain, with colored porcelain inlay. **clear glaze application only** Detailing work is rather poor, but first time I attempted to do it. Definitely have to sieve the glaze at this temp, even the smallest of pieces do not melt. Nerd

glazenerd
Ron: ADA clay is a white stoneware body. I will get you a sample here shortly, soon as I get caught up on formulating a cone 11 body for a customer. Have more experimental cone six bodies cooking in the oven now. Very curious to see how the high expansion body turns out. Nerd
