tjr980
Hi Everyone! I am in the process of building a new Raku Kiln! I was planning on using the ceramic fiber listed here or something very similar: http://cgi.ebay.com/SAFE-Non-Ceramic-Fiber-Blanket-1-2-8-SW607-/130314584072?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e575ac008 Would I need 1" blanket if I was getting the #8 instead of the #6 density? Also, would I need to use a rigidizer on the ceramic fiber to prevent harmful substance being given off during firing or not? If I do have to use a rigidizer would this work? http://www.knifeandgun.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=IT One last thing. Can I place kiln posts, to hold up my shelf, on top of the fiber since I plan on placing it all of the way around the inside of the kiln? Thank You!! Marcia Selsor
I'd recommend 8# at 1" thickness. I use that and I can still see a red glow through the walls when it is hot. I also spray ITC instead of rigidizer, but that is personal choice. I also place posts on fiber on the floor in one of my raku kilns. Not a problem. Idaho Potter
8# is good weight. I personally don't use any coating on the fiber of my raku kiln and haven't for over 25 years. Instead of shelf supports, I use kiln bricks to hold up my shelf (my kiln measures 20" dia. by 24"ht) and also direct the flame from the burners. One brick at the back as the target area, and one or either side of burn port to direct flame to target brick. Solves two problems at once. tjr980
Thank you for the replies! One last question: is there any noticeable difference between the hyperlite almost honeycomb designed kiln shelves and the traditional kiln shelves? Also any recommendations on ways to sell pieces online besides etsy and eBay? Thanks again!
Marcia Selsor
where did you find honey combed kiln shelves. I had perforated shelves with 1 inch holes and thought they worked really well. I got them from Euclids but they were the last they had. That was about 10 years ago. I need some new ones. Marcia

Marcia Selsor
Thanks! I think I will look into those for several functions. Marcia
