  1. We're up in the North Country in our little hovel. I'm getting the new studio site ready, putting in a garden, and working on the hovel. There will be no clay until fall, so I'll have to live vicariously through the forum.

I will relay your comments to my lovely wife! Also, she says it is definitely not a hovel.

  2. I am going to have a lot of time to read while I wait in the coming months, anyone have any opinions on a few good pottery books, informative or inspirational or both?

  3. My house/studio was burned to the ground in the Valley Fire that started very close to my home. Our street was the first to go and my area is totally destroyed. 75% of the homes in my little town are gone. I had over 300 pots ready for fairs and of course, all the pottery we use daily. I’m devastated. I’m hoping I’ll be able to recover some pots that didn’t break/melt, and maybe my kilns? Wheel? The evacuation order hasn’t been lifted yet. With the shards I’ll make a big mosaic wall when we...

I am so sorry to hear of your misfortune. I'm glad that you and yours are unhurt, but what a terrible thing to have to go through. Best of luck to you; you're being a lot braver than I would be in similar circumstances.

  4. Fianlly figured out the problem with my little test kiln. It was kicking the circuit breaker when I turned on the upper element. First I thought it was the circuit breaker, so I changed that. Next time I turned on the upper lelment, shower of sparks. Eventually I traced the problem to the clamping device that connects the element to the switch wire. I'd replaced the original with a replacement from Euclid. Unfortunately the new clamp was an inline clamp rather than the crosswise cla...

clamp, and the washer that stopped the clamp from touching the jacket had a big hole in it.

  5. Abandoning all my glaze work, and sticking with one glaze. Work harder on improving the aesthetics of my pots in combination with this glaze. Sell pots with this glaze. Once I feel I understand it. I will test until I find another glaze that goes with it, and then repeat.

Sounds as if you're taking a smart approach. Lots of folks have said that it's limitations that lead to good work, and they are right. Because clay is such a protean material, it's a little harder to get natural limitations, so they have to be self-imposed.
