desertpotter
Hi all, I'm wondering if there's a good way to test an older kiln for lead residue? I have a 20+ year old kiln in my possession that I haven't fired yet, and want to make sure it's worth the work to get it set up. I learned that if lead glazes were ever fired in a kiln that there will be lead residue left inside the walls, and that lead will end up on pots in future firings. I performed an at home lead test kit with a swab to the brick on the underside of the lid and it didn't pick up anything. I was wondering if there are other or better ways to test and double check! Thanks!
neilestrick
A swab test is the only method I've heard of, other than sending a brick off to a lab. I'd feel comfortable trusting the swab test.
