Stephen Robison Posted February 14, 2012 Report Share Posted February 14, 2012 So education in ceramics is the topic of this forum and what better event to talk about at this time of year than NCECA. It is right around the corner and those attending I am sure have their plans well set and are excited about the great city of Seattle they are about to travel to. Those of us who live around and in Seattle are geared up and ready for the party. So is it a party? Certainly and Seattle will prove to be a great one. Ya man we go to see our buddies and have a beer or a scotch or for those who don’t drink it doesn’t stop them from partaking in the PARTY, it is a party celebrating friendships and the growth of our discipline! But we come from all over the country and all over the world to really embrace the main mission of NCECA. And that mission is education on the ceramic arts. So how can we take advantage of that mission? First and foremost we experience the art in real time and not from images posted on the web or printed in books or magazines. We go to every possible show we can get to and every lecture that is relevant to what we are interested in. But I pose another direction for attendees and that is to step outside of their comfort zone. Go to lectures that are not about something you already know something about, challenge yourself to really look at work that you normally would not give a second glance. Taste new tastes and experience new ideas. If you don’t like oysters try them again. Nice and fresh on the dock! I pose an assignment to all who are lucky to attend. Get a mole skin and write and draw or type away in your phone or ipad and take some great notes on what you learn. Compile those notes and post away on this forum once you get home. I want to hear what you took away from the conference. What was your biggest a-ha moment. Who did you meet and how did that meeting change you. What did you see in a demonstration or hear in a lecture that really made you think about your own work. Most important is have a great time dancing to the Mud Flaps and hope to see you there. In Ellensburg WA just of I-90 Central Washington University is hosting a two day free workshop from 9:30-3:00 in the Student Union Theatre. There will be three great artists, Tara wilson, Mackenzie Smith and Doug Browe all working together. Also the Art Stream will be here and three great clay shows at Gallery One DT Eburg along with the CWU Atmospheric show focusing on Wood fired and soda fired artists and a show at Alley Cats Gallery. I am going to a pre-conference wood firing with Mike McCullough. I have ad my room for months and same old room mates for years. I always feel like it is a gathering of the clans. Looking forward to seeing many old faces and enjoy the new ones. One of the best things is the emerging artists presentations on Saturday morning. Wednesday is the attempt to see all the shows. I am teaching a pre-NCECA workshop on coloring clay in Snohomish then on Friday 5-6 pm running a discussion on marketing your pottery in room 309 of the convention center. Superheroes, people in costumes, gamers, cool t shirts!! Not only will the convention center be interesting but the hotels will be colorful as well. Woohoo! Does anyone know if the demonstrations will be broadcast on the web like they were in 2010? For those of us that couldn't atttend, it was great to be able to see Ron Meyers and Christa Assad doing their demos, I wonder if that will be done this year? I will be meeting and greeting in Potters Council Booth from 9-11 on Wed, and 10-12 the Th and Fri. Attending workshops too: Posey Bacopolous on majolica; Stepehen Hill on once-fired, layer sprayed ^6 porcelain; and the post NCECA Teabowl workshop at Tacoma CC. Well, that's my Bucket List! I certainly realize that NCECA is NOT inexpensive to attend....... but maybe you could still try to do that? It is WELL worth what it costs. On Friday morning from 9 - 10:30 in Ballroom 6C, he will be on a panel discussing the re-building in Mashiko after the devastating earthquake and tsunami. I will be hosting a Topical Discussion at NCECA on Friday from 5-6 in Room 309 at the Convention Center. It is titled "On the Edge of Success" and we will be discussing issues related to selling your pottery. Is your work ready? Are you ready? How can you present yourself and your work in a professional manner? How and where to sell. Share your experiences and learn from others. Please join me in what promises to be a lively and interesting discussion hour that could propel you into your next phase of your pottery career. See you in Seattle! I have to reply that, although I have not met Dinah in person, I have the awesome privilege of working with her -- via phone, email and "Google Docs" -- as my mentor through the Potters Council Mentorship program. I can't begin to adequately describe what a fantastic mentor she is, and what an incredible experience this is for me! A thousand thanks to the Potters Council, and to Dinah!
