Guest
I just came across this bit of info, seems like the details on the Standard's website hasn't been updated It seems prior to July 2015 Standard was using 200 mesh feldspar then their suppler changed to 325 mesh feldspar. It seems sometime in the future they will revert back More info New Shrinkage & Absorption Rates For Standard ClayClays Made With 325 Mesh Custer FeldsparAs Of September 22, 2015 Clay Number | Cone | Shrinkage Rate | Absorption Rate 112 6 12.5% 1.85% 153 6 12.5% 4.00% 153 10 14.0% 0.75% 240 6 13.5% 1.60% 257 8 14.0% 0.50% 257 10 15.0% 0.25% 259 6 13.0% 2.80%259 10 14.0% 0.50%
Dick White
Well, actually, the feldspar will remain 325 mesh. Pacer, the corporate name behind Custer Feldspar, which is the only remaining USA large-scale producer of potash feldspar, had an equipment breakdown with their 200 mesh mill. They made a business decision to not repair/replace that mill and all future production would be 325 mesh. For us potters, 325 mesh works nicely for most glazes, but the moist clay producers used a lot of 200 mesh. So they had to adjust their clay body recipes and we have to adjust to the differences.
