Since the format changed , this method has worked. I forget who figured it out. It wasn't me. Here goes:

make an album in your gallery for your avatars and put photos 72 dpi and 50k. Then select one. Under the options menu select make photo.

Marcia . . . I had to click upload after doing the options menu, select make photo.

yes, you need to upload the photo.Someone asked me how to do it, so I sent him the above. Instead of put , I should have said upload photos the size of 72 dpi and 50k.

 

Put a small pic, less than 50k, in your gallery.

Select that pic as you would to view it.
There is an "Options" button on the Right-middle of the screen.
Click that, and select "Set as Photo".
If the pic you uploaded is too big, you will be asked to crop the pic, click save.
