Robb
Can slip trailing be successfully done on bone dry clay or a bisqued pot?
Chilly
Hasn't worked for me. The slip will shrink as it dries, and then it cracks.
PeterH
Isn't this mainly a slip versus engobe issue? http://ceramicartsdaily.org/ceramic-supplies/ceramic-raw-materials/slip-engobe-or-underglaze-robin-hopper-demystifies-three-common-pottery-materials/
Robb
Thanks Peter. I just read the article on slip / engobes and if I understand it right I can use underglaze in place of slip on a bisqued pot. I'm going to try Amaco Velvet Underglaze but want it to be raised like slip so think I need to add a flocculent such as vinegar. Are you familiar with this process? PeterH
raised like slip so think I need to add a flocculent such as vinegar. A rambling response based on too much theory and far too little practice. In an ideal world you want to finish up with a mix with both - the right consistency to trail - and the right water:solids ratio to control the volume-loss on drying. If you start with a dry mix you can control both over a significant range, as shown in this John Britt video: If you are starting off with a premixed slip your options are more limited, as you cannot decrease the water:solids ratio. Hence the comment: Leach gives the useful tip to add vinegar to a trailing slip, particularly if it turns out to be rather more runny than you wanted. The vinegar acts as a flocculent, and stiffens a slip in an amazing way, while in fact diluting it so that it dries to a satisfying low relief. http://www.ceramicartswa.asn.au/event/slip-slap-slop-janet-kovesi-watt So my guess is that with a premix you may need to flocculate to get a good trailing consistency, but the fired trail may be thinner than you expect (as the water:solids ratio is probably on the high side). Robb
Thanks again Peter! What a wealth of information! I'm going to try the underglaze tonight and hope it works. I just hope that it's thick enough. I'm having trouble with my login - sometimes it lets me in but most times not. Need to fix that and then download my freebie.
