cone06 ready glazes

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am a potter from India. I have some Spectrum and myaco ready to use cone 06 glazes from USA.

The Reds and Orange glazes do not work at all, rest are fine. My kiln is electric, top loading,1.5 cubic feet.

Tried slow [8 hrs] and fast [4 hrs] firing cycle. No luck.

Where am I going wrong??

please advise.

The cadmium based colors are very sensitive to sulphur compounds. If your clay contains a lot of sulphur bearing compounds, and you do not bisque them with a suppficently high cone end point and also plenty of oxygen circulating, then the colors will not develop.

Do you get a lot of "rotten eggs" smell during bisque firings?

best,

I have not used the Spectrum glazes but I am very familiar with the Mayco red & oranges. Can you tell me what Mayco product you used, how you applied them and what happened to them once fired?

As has already been stated, sulfur will effect the cadmium in glazes as most reds and oranges are this way. I bisque to 06 to try to remove all sulfur compounds from the clay. Also, I have found that the reds and pinks do not do well if you have too thin of a glaze coat on. this often entails "flowing on" at least 3 coats of the glaze. What are the characteristics of the glaze surface and color? If the glaze is too thin you will often have a white color with some(in pooled areas) red or pink. If the glaze is matt, and should be shiny, it could be either the sulfurs or the glaze thickness. Let people know what the glaze characteristics are, and they may be able to help you more.
