anne.halligan-luca@yai.org
Hi, DId try to search this topic, no luck. Usually mix 4 oz of mason stain to 40 oz of dry clay, Standard 266, to make colored clay. Today ran out of dry clay. Now want to continue making colored clay. What is the equivialent weight of wet clay to dry clay? Any guesses? Thank you, Anne
Guest JBaymore
Varies with the clay body recipe and the consistency it is made to be at. A "guess" is maybe 27% by weight water. best, .....................john
Biglou13
+1 what john b sez some recipes call for 70% dry 30% water either way you are in the ball park..... well more likely infield if not closer.
Tyler Miller
You can figure out the amount of water in a clay body if you know the ingredients of the body and their specific gravities. You can also figure out the amount of dry ingredients in a glaze this way. See Michael Cardew's "Pioneer Pottery" for details about the method. I would detail it here, but it's been a while since I've done it and the math is a little fuzzy in my head. I personally wouldn't guess because water content can be variable and you may not get repeatable results.
anne.halligan-luca@yai.org
Thank you all for your responses. Will probably go to ballpark instead of math class. A
