“Anagama First Fire” Outdoor Ceramics Exhibit and New Kiln Debut!

Recommended Posts

Kelley Stelling Contemporary, in collaboration with New Hampshire Potter’s Guild, presents “Anagama First Fire”, its third outdoor ceramics event on Saturday September 14th, 2024 from 10am to 1pm.

After four years of fundraising, the NHPG is excited to debut their newly constructed Anagama Kiln. The kiln has been made possible by generous supporters, who over the years have participated  in fundraising events, purchased pieces, and attended exhibitions hosted by Kelley Stelling Contemporary.

The NH Potter’s Guild’s original kiln was almost 30 years old and in need of replacement. The Guild chose to build an Anagama kiln in its place. “Anagama” is an ancient style kiln, which means “cave kiln” translated from Japanese. It describes a single chamber kiln that slopes down like a tunnel and is wood fired. The design and construction was led by Eric Maglio and Belinda Bodnar, both potters and members of the Guild, over the course of several weekends with the help of over 25 volunteers.

Kelley Stelling is excited to collaborate once again with the NH Potter’s Guild for an outdoor ceramics exhibition staged during the first 7 day firing process of the new kiln. This event will feature an outdoor exhibition of selected works by ceramic artists, curated by Kelley Stelling Contemporary. These unique pieces will be available for sale. There will also be a silent auction of works donated by Guild artists.

Details: Saturday, September 14th from 10am-1pm (rain date Sunday, September 15) at Al Jaeger’s property and location of the kiln, 20 Perry Road, Deerfield, NH. This event is free and open to the public.

Kelley Stelling Contemporary is a pop-up gallery dedicated to the presentation of works by emerging and mid-career artists, with events hosted throughout New England.

SO COOL.......I just renewed my membership in the Guild, and had never fired in the former kiln. I'm looking forward to experiencing this one in the not-too-distant future.  The setting, in the back woods of Derry, at Al's place, is stunning. It's also terrific that it is an anagama, especially since the loss of the one at the former NHIA site.
