  1. Hi! I'm trying to create a smooth, glossy white surface with Mayco Stroke and Coat Cottontail on a light clay body, but the glaze is coming out rough and pitted. I used 3 coats of the glaze and fired to cone 5. I tried to brush it on nice and evenly. I've attached photos of the bisqued test-piece and the glazed surface. I'd greatly appreciate advice on this!
  2. Hi, you are exactly right. I will definitely check out those tools. Thanks so much for your advice!
  3. Wow, those are lovely. Thanks for sharing these examples! I think I'll say my egg came out exactly the way I planned ;-)
  4. Thank you so much for your kind reply! I really appreciate it.
  5. Thank you. The white slip is some random stoneware mix from a local supplier :-)
  6. Thanks, this is super useful for me to understand.
  7. Why does the brown clay show so much more after glazing?
  8. I brushed a light-colored stoneware slip onto a leather-hard Laguna B3 brown piece and bisqued at Cone 04. Then I brushed a clear glaze (Amaco Clear Mixing Celadon) onto the piece and glaze-fired at Cone 5. To my surprise, the slip seems to have come loose and redistributed over the surface, rather than retaining its original pattern. See before and after photos. Is this typical? Or maybe something to do with the glaze I used? Sorry if this is a newbie question, I am a newbie :-) Thanks!
  9. Fantastic, thanks so much for the advice!
  10. If I have a bunch of bisqued cookies and want to kiln wash them all, can I apply the kiln wash and then stack the cookies on top of each other when I bisque again to mature the kiln wash? Or will the kiln wash make them stick together? Could I save more time by applying kiln wash to greenware cookies, stacking them, and bisquing/kiln washing them all at once? thx
  11. I noticed my Skutt kiln seems to radiate a LOT more from the top than from the stainless steel sides, and I think it is because the emissivity of the stainless steel is much less than that of the firebrick. Was thinking of just layering aluminum foil over the top... but don't want lid to crack per @liambesaw. thx Mike
