Mistfit reacted to Dick White in Tea Pots
I was taught that the reason for the smaller holes vs. a single large opening between the body and the spout is less about straining the tea leaves and more about the fluid dynamics of pouring through a tapering spout. If the full volume of the tea in the pot is poured through the large hole into the tapering spout, the pressure inside the spout will build and the flow will gurgle out the end of the spout. The "strainer" holes in the body restrict the amount of tea that can flow into the spout and that keeps the flow out the end of the spot more regular. That's what I was taught.

Mistfit got a reaction from preeta in Looking For Alternative Ways To Hold Down Pots For Trimming
Unless I have missed the best time to trim (wait too long) I typically can get away with just dampening the bat head and pressing slightly down on it and it will almost vacuum seal it to the head. If you trim while still slightly damp you do not have to put as much pressure on your tool so it is not as likely to move.

Mistfit reacted to oldlady in Help ! I Can't Center
since you have had others see what you are doing, this is probably a silly suggestion.  you need speed to center.  not the top speed of your wheel but sufficient to make the mass spin quickly.  speed and softer clay could help if you are trying too slowly.   if you press on a faster spinning lump, it can only take the pressure for so long before that section you first touched is gone around out of the way.  slowly spinning clay can be pushed and prodded out of round more easily.  this is hard to explain but close your eyes and imagine what is happening.

once opened, slow down the wheel to pull walls up.

Well.. I do not know if I will have this done in time for the end of this challenge but I will certainly give it a go. I have definitely used the Hydria as an inspiration as opposed to trying to make a replication..

I also am going to try to mark 2 things off of  my "to do" list with this one pice.. Community Challenge and Tea Pot..

    These are my WIP pics.

I cut the neck into two pieces and make 2 "tea cup" out of it. They stack back pretty well. I have a lid that will cover the tea area and the top of the neck so the whole thing will stack up..

Lots of fiddling with this one. I am pretty happy with it so far.

Interesting challenge! This is definitely going to stretch my skills... I am thinking I will have to throw this in either 2 or 3 pieces.... Good luck to all! I look forward to seeing your amazing work again this month.

I am pretty pleased with how these turned out. Many things in this glaze firing failed. I am still working out why. These were created as a bottomless pot on the wheel. I then allowed them to dry a bit and from there I put in the "chopstick" indentation to create the lid/gallery. I took a couple of slabs with the leaf imprint in them and draped them over the top of my open form and allowed both to get to leather hard. I then attached them all together and went through way too much time cleaning up the edges and joints. Sometimes my OCD gets the better of me. Then it was firing, waxing, firing again.

That is a lovely piece! It has weight and lightness all at the same time. Have you tried that shape with the top triangle offset from the bottom one?

I am new here but have been lurking for a while. I have just set up my pottery within the last couple of months. I have been playing with doing chopstick boxes. I have been thinking about trying to see if I can do them altered to a square shape. I do not know if it will work but I am going to give it a go to see if I can get the lids to work on non-round shapes.

    Edit:
I think I will do this as a series of three.. One will be square, one triangular shape and one... well I will figure that out later. I went out this morning and threw one that I shaped into a rounded edge square. I have some ideas on how to push the square idea more but that will have to wait til tomorrow when I have more time.

Image of my first attempt at the square shape (rounded edge square really but who is counting)

Not really sure what software they are using for this board but you always have the option to store your photos in an outside source. I use "Photobucket" myself and have for years. I know they have a limit on their sizes but it must be huge due to the fact that I have not hit the limit.

I think you can still show the images within the post as well.  Take the link from photobucket and copy it.. click on the image icon and the pic will show.

It is an extra step but.. it does work too..

Sorry to horn in on this topic but it does have to do with the same topic. What are your feelings overall on spending the additional money for a 1 horse over the one-third or one-half horse motor? I am just starting to throw so I have very little experience. Is the big difference the amount of clay you can center or are there other factors that come into play, like longevity?
