jmancin07
I have a cross draft wood fire kiln that I use 300 grade stainless steel for the the grate in the the fire box. I have noticed that it has been oxidizing and flaking off a little bit after a few firings. Should I be worried about the chrome flaking off and getting into the functional ware? Mindmaze
True stainless steel does not flake off like that. I would change the grate to an expanded metal with no coating as the chrome my turn to vapor and ruin the pieces.
Marcia Selsor
Thick rebar works well for a wood grate. Marcia

jmancin07
Thanks everyone. I was thinking about just welding a rebar fire grate together really quick. Im going to fire in 2 weeks. Is there any problems with just using regular rebar you get from home depot? Not sure where to find true stainless steel.
