laurenadams
I have been working with a high fire clay (cone 6-10) for sculptural pieces and have been glazing them with low fire underglazes and glazes (cone 05-06). I am interested in making some functional ware and am not sure if they will be food safe or sturdy enough for use if I finish them in the same way. The glaze I have is cone 05 and food safe. Is there any reason I should avoid this (other than that it is a little funny and backwards)?
Chris Campbell
Its like shopping for clothes, totally ignoring the size tag and deciding you'll just try to make it fit somehow . I would advise buying either low fire clay or higher firing glaze. Why stress yourself? As to the more serious aspects, you will either have underfired clay which will be more porous and so will absorb water more easily ... or you will have overfired glaze which will not be happy and probably craze and ping for you. neilestrick
Ditto Chris. Get some new clay or new glaze that work together properly. While Norm's method would work, trying to get an even application of low fire glaze on a previously high fired pot is difficult at best and way too much work.
