Jonas WinSlo
I am wondering if it is safe to fire paper in an electric kiln. Such as paper clay or a piece that has paper inside it to keep the shape of the piece. My kiln is located in a garage that is attached to my home. I do not have a vent but open 2 garage doors and a window when firing. Thanks for any help you can give me seeing I am fairly new to pottery. Chris Campbell
it will stink when it burns out but that happens fairly early in the firing. As long as it is well vented you should be OK. I have been told not to use colored ad inserts and flyers due to what chemicals they might have in them. I always stuff things with old telephone book pages and fluff from the clothes dryer. neilestrick
The vent on your kiln is not really made to handle the amount of smoke that will come off of burning paper, so you will likely notice the smell. It's also not great for the elements, but as long as you're not doing load after load of it, it won't matter.
