What is the difference between hard paste and soft paste porcelain? Matt Oz Posted April 17, 2012 Report Share Posted April 17, 2012 Hello, The simple version is: Soft-paste porcelains were early attempts by European potters to replicate Chinese porcelain (which is hard-paste), until they figured it out in the 1700s. The high fire porcelain clay bodies you can buy from suppliers today are hard-paste.
