Hard paste, Soft paste

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I've been wondering about this question for a while now and I was thinking that someone out there may be able to help.

What is the difference between hard paste and soft paste porcelain? You always see things labeled in museums like this and I always wonder.

thanks

Josefina

Hello,

The simple version is:

Soft-paste porcelains were early attempts by European potters to replicate Chinese porcelain (which is hard-paste), until they figured it out in the 1700s. The high fire porcelain clay bodies you can buy from suppliers today are hard-paste.
