Lamnidae
I'm relatively new to the whole ceramics thing, having only spent the last few months taking classes at the Archie Bray in Helena, MT. I'm already confident that I'm into it enough that I've been buying a lot of supplies, etc... One recent purchase was a large amount of wax resist from a company online that was advertised simply as water based, but when I received it the bottle was plastered with warnings about formaldehyde. My question is whether there is any general knowledge amongst experienced ceramists out there about precautions I should take when using the wax resist, or if I should even avoid it alltogether? Any help? Thanks ahead of time! Nick
bciskepottery
Go to the website of the manufacturer/supplier and read the MSDS for the wax resist. If that does not provide enough information, call the manufacturer -- the MSDS will list a contact phone number. I did a google search on "formaldahyde in wax resist" and got a couple hits of interest as examples -- http://maycocolors.com/images/msds/old_msds/2004_wax_resist.pdf http://www.duncanpaintstore.com/msds/MSDS%20Duncan%20Specialty%20SY547%20Wax%20Resist%200605.pdf http://www.claymaker.com/MSDS/wet_chemicals/MobilcerWaxResist.pdf Best I can tell/follow, when the wax dries it may release formaldahyde into the atmosphere. Find your manufacturer and check it out.
