JudyM
. Hoping someone here may be able to advise me in the best way to hand build a similar pot to the one pictured. I haven't as yet sourced clay or even know which would be best to use but know that I would like it to have a terracotta like look about it, so would not need it to be glazed. I would guess it would be low fire. I have watched many hand building video tutorials and now feel confident enough to finally give it a try. Would appreciate as much advice as possible. Thanks kindly
Marcia Selsor
You should probably get an earthenware/terra cotta clay. Roll out the base using a board covered with a cloth or paper. Place on a turntable. Then start rolling coils and attaching them (score and slip), smoothing and forming as you go. Marcia
JudyM
Thank you Marcia, appreciate your advice. Should I use an anvil and paddle too?
Marcia Selsor
You can use ribs to develop the round form if that is what you are trying to make. Paddling is fine too. Marcia
Chris Campbell
If you go into the Ceramic Arts daily part of this site you will find a lot of instruction on using coils to build pots similar to this one. http://ceramicartsdaily.org/search/?search_term=Coils&engine=default&css_class=cad_site_search_form Could building is fun ... Enjoy!
JudyM
Thank you Marcia and Chris for taking the time to help me. Hopefully with practice I should be able to make something vaguely similar to the pictured pot.
Chris Campbell
I think you will find working with coils to be satisfying and fun. Just find a nice terra cotta clay, take your time with it, enjoy the process and post pictures when you are done so we can see.

alabama
Hey, If you're going to hand build add 50% course quartz contractors sand, and place the base on a lazy Susan to help on turning. Also, you might try making a 9" diameter one first to work out any problems that might show up on the 18 inch pot you want to make. Plan on the small pot to take 45 minutes to an hour and the larger one a good 90 minutes. Practice..and repeat... Good luck! See ya, Alabama
