    Decorating Slips

3 grams is for 100 grams of slip. It's 3% of dry weight. You might do as Arnold suggested. Try mixing different size tsps of oxide/stains and test on tiles.

    Glaze Cracking On Bisque

That usually happens to me with commercial glazes that get too dry in the jars. i have tried remixing with water, using the additive Amaco sells and nothing seems to revive them. Now i just throw them out if i see them cracking on the bisque.I hate to throw money into the trash can. Anyone have any luck with this?

    Custom Made Extruder Dies

I have been getting my cutting boards from the thrift store and they do make great dies. Never thought of looking for them at the Dollar Store.

    Cone Breaking During Firing?

You might try slightly sanding your supports to make them feel smooth, it they feel rough to the touch. Make your you don't load any thing near your cone holders that might lean on the rods during a firing.

    Really, Really Basic Question

Interesting thread. I some times use the soda ash from my pottery supplies to dye fabric. They charge more for it at the dye supply companies. Good to know to keep it in a sealed container.

    Natural Talent....

One of my former professors talked about natural talent. He said you can have natural talent but it's what you do with it. He said a person who likes what they do and works hard will go further than someone with "natural talent". He said in his 35 yrs of teaching, he had seen two students who could throw better than him when they started but 10yrs later they were working at other jobs which they loved none which involved clay or art.

    Natural Talent....

I have to laugh at the "expecting a soup bowl..." remark. i'm afraid that my first 10 bowls could have supplied 10 people with paper clip holders or doubled as small Cat food bowls.

    Teaching Position

I will pass it on. Houston has way too much traffic for me but my daughter knows some teachers looking for work.
  17. Use a drill bit for plastics and drill a bit and stop and drill some more until it's gone through the board. Never had any problem with melting. I have one die with 5 holes so i can do a whole bag of coils in no time at all.
  18. Extruders are so much fun, i have two, a old Randall and a Big Blue. I make dies from used acrylic cutting boards, much easier to cut than steel. I also make animals from the tube forms!
  19. I will have to try that. I used another method that requires days of letting it all settle and it made much more than i needed.

    Orton Vent Master

The colors of your glazes will not change. An orton exhaust fan would be a good thing. And while you are at it, get a carbon monoxide detector too.
  22. If you make a slip of your clay, you can probably use your cake decorating tips. They will be very delicate in the greenware state. I had a friend who dipped oragami paper cranes in her slip and fired them. The paper burned away and she had delicate clay cranes.

    Clay Question

Short clay is hard to throw and hand build. I tried some new clay last year that was short and i ended up making tiles with it. It was a lovely brown color and i had had visions of making fat dogs. Ended up making tile coasters and i will say some of the low fire glazes had some neat effects on that warm brown clay.
