Baltimore Clayworks Workshop - Ali Saunders - Guide to Surface Decoration - September 21-22, 2024

Color, vibrancy, and pattern come to mind when looking at Ali Saunders's work!  Come learn all about surface decoration in this two-day upcoming workshop.  Ali will be Baltimore Clayworks long-term resident starting in September.  

DESCRIPTION: 

In this workshop participants will learn a large variety of surface decoration techniques so that they can see which techniques work best for them and apply them to their ceramic work. There will be conversations about composition and methods for splitting up space within a ceramic form. In addition to teaching individual techniques,  Ali will also discuss layering and the results students can get from combining decoration techniques.

Throughout the class, Ali will also demo the ways she uses the following surface decoration techniques to make finished work:

Carving Techniques - carving, sgraffito, inlay

Wax Resist

Paper Stencils

Slip Transfer

Water Etching - wax and packing tape

 

Baltimore Clayworks will provide the following materials:

Clay, 8 4x4 tiles per student, 2 6x6 tiles per student, white slip and a variety of colored slip, wax, newspaper, packing tape 

 

Students are asked to bring brushes if they have them.  Some will be provided.  

 

Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22 from 10:00-5:00 pm.  

There will be a break for lunch both days.  

Fee: $210 member/$225 non-member  

If you are curious about Ali Saunder's workshop but haven't decided whether or not to sign up you may consider attending her Artist Talk.  This will take place on Tuesday, September 10th from 12:30-1:30pm. 

 

 

Bio

Ali Saunders is a ceramic artist from Boerne, Texas who makes functional pottery using pattern and color. She received her Bachelors of Arts from the University of St. Thomas and her Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University. After graduating from the University of St. Thomas she was a resident at Flower City Arts Center in Rochester, New York. Most recently, she has been the Salad Days Resident at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts where she made 450 plates to be a part of the Salad Days event in July 2023. Saunders is inspired by the growth and abundance in nature and makes work that connects to legacy of female makers in her family.
