About Me

Artist Statement

Deborah J. Bassett-Maxwell

Her original vision for Red Mudd Studio began with looking between the lines of art and sculptural pottery. The process of pottery requires that one maintain an open mind and sense of humor.

This new Loft Art series captures textures and layers that resemble the noise of our lives. Some of the industrial pieces were fired up to four to six times. Firings range from oxidation, reduction, Raku and pit firing. “I loved the unique process of creating the urban feeling which relied heavily on the textures that created the finished piece. The outcome was secondary and did not matter.”

The process was involved in constantly looking at the relationships of design to textures. Like freckles, each beauty mark is different, but when viewed as a whole the individual “spots” disappear. As with architecture when viewed as a building, the individual parts are sometimes lost. This Loft Art series captures the “noise” that makeup the individual elements that beg to be seen.

Currently Maxwell’s work is at the State Capital in Senator Phil Pavlov’s office.

The Mary Lou Zeek Gallery, Salem, OR, hosted the exhibit “Plate It Up”, which one of Maxwell’s plates was selected for the book publication “Plate It Up”.

As part of a Michigan Artist exhibit, Maxwell’s work was featured at the Detroit Institute of Arts, 2010-11.

One of her pit-fired vessels was selected for installation in the residence of Governor Jennifer Granholm as part of the Governor's Residence Michigan Artist Program, from July 2007 – July 2008.

She will be studying ceramics at La Meridiana, Italy in the fall of 2011.

She received a BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design.
