gold glazes @ earthenware temperature

Recommended Posts

in my Glaze Book by Stephen Murfitt there's a recipe for a Satin, matt gold metallic stoneware glaze. The dry components of this glaze are : manganese dioxide 61 China clay 23 Copper oxide 8 Cobalt oxide 8 the firing range is 1240-1260

If there is a way to lower the firing range and still get the gold glaze could someone tell me if there is away to do that?

any suggestions would be appreciated

Hi and welcome to the CAD forums.

First of all to call that recipe a "glaze" is implying a LOT. At the best, it is a "surface treatment" of a very dry slip with a LOT of colorant inclusion. It is simply kaolin (a refreactory white clay) and colorants.

And it is one that should NOT be used on a food contact surface.

To carry those exact characterists down to the lower temperature would be problematic.

best,
