wollastonite replacement?

Recommended Posts

Found a glaze I'd like to try on Alisa Clausen's flickr page and wondered if I can substitute something for the Woolastonite which I don't have? Also, this is a cone 6 recipe but it looks to me like it'd go up to cone 8/9 which is where I fire – anyone think not?

Alisa's WoDo White:

49 Nepheline Syenite

25 Dolomite

6 Wollastonite

20 Ball Clay

The general rule is:

For each 100 grams of Wollastonite substitute 86.1 grams of Whiting and 51.7 grams of Silica.

So, for the above, you'd chop the Wollastonite, and add 5.1 Whiting, and 3.1 Silica. (Differences of LOI mean the Whiting + Silica adds to more than the Wollastonite.)

I have followed this rule on a number of occasions, and it has always worked for me.

No idea about the cone - try it and see!
