Hi all. I am teaching a deliberate "pairing" of short, 5 week CE courses now that I have returned from spending the early summer in Japan once again.

 

The focus is on Japanese ceramics. The courses can be done completely separately, or they can work really well as a "pairing" with a one hour dinner break between them. One is a studio class, one is a slide talk with tons of images. The chawan course will end with an informal tea ceremony. The history one will end with me bringing into class some of my collection of Japanese work.These classes are limited to the first 12 people, and some spaces are gone already. History of Japanese Ceramics Lecture Series

 

CER051 5 Weeks Baymore (Lowell 101)

Wed. 7:00 – 8:30 pm (July 6 – Aug. 3)

 

This series of slide lectures will explore the cultural context in which this art form developed and currently thrives, including the impact of geography, deeply held Shinto and Buddhist beliefs, the lifestyle of the Samurai class, and the impact of the Tea Ceremony on the art. We will look at the production of the Six Ancient Kilns, the Mingei Movement, the work of the Living National Treasures, and contemporary trends as new artist-potters throw off the shackles of centuries of tradition. Finally, we will look at how Japanese ceramics had an impact on contemporary American artist-potter’s work and how Abstract Expressionism impacted the Japanese ceramists.

Making Handbuilt Chawan (Tea Ceremony Teabowls)

The formal Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu) has had a profound impact on Japanese and world ceramics since the feudal era in Japan. The making of formal teabowls (Chawan) is considered the pinnacle of the art of the potter in Japan. This five session class, which is a companion to the Wednesday evening “History of Japanese Ceramics†lecture series, will share two specific hand-forming techniques for Chawan and also explore the desired formal attributes of a Chawan within the context of Chanoyu. A discussion of the Chanoyu process will be included, and we’ll end our work by sharing matcha (Tea Ceremony tea) out of the bowls we have made.

 

Prerequisite: CER022- intro course (or permission of instructor; not for those with no prior ceramics experience).
