  1. Hey all, Thank you all for your advice and suggestions. This has generated quite a bit of thought! I hope the discussion continues. About the intellectual property thing- yea it definitely is related to that but the State of Alabama has this strict code of ethics that makes this situation much more difficult. I was actually on the Faculty Senate committee that was supposed to write the policy for Intellectual property. We wrote it and were ready to submit it when the administration stepped in and hired some lawyer to write it for them. It did not help the situation for sure. Alabama Ethics Commission is very strict about using state funds materials space for personal gain. I think that I may contact them (Alabama Department of Ethics) just for my own peace of mind and curiosity. I certainly do not want to do anything that affects my colleagues positions. I have always believed that my work in the studio at school was for the benefit of the students so that they see the whole process. Most of my students do not come from backgrounds that would have made them familiar with arts processes and ideas about the "life of an artist" so anything that can make this seem more possible and real to them I feel is justified.
  2. I work at a university in Alabama. Alabama has the Alabama Ethics Commission that regulates public employees. Part of the code of ethics states that an employee may not use facilities in order for financial gain. They force us to watch films on the subject and sign papers which state that we have not financially gained from our positions using public funds, property of materials. (not sure of exact wording as I type this) I have been fighting this with my chair off and on for too long. I have always felt that my students need to see work being done and produced so they can more fully grasp the potential of the medium and when I am working in the studio the differences in their work is marked. I have built my own studio at home and do most of my work there. I must say that my work takes a back seat to all of the duties of teaching four classes (only one multilevel class in clay) and other university obligations. Work at the school is mostly in the form of demo pieces and occasionally larger pieces as the kilns are larger there. My colleagues at other state schools have their studios at their school with no studio at their homes. My last correspondence with my chair indicated that even demo pieces were off limits??? Any suggestions on how to fight this conundrum?

  4. Hey all, I have not posted on here in quite a while. I was a regular on Clay art before the change but somehow never made it back. I am running for the Potters Council Board and would like your vote! I am intriqued about learning more about The Potters Council and seeking out ways to make it better and more suitable to its members and our current culture. I have been a member of the Potter's Council for many years (ten maybe?). I have been involved with craft galleries (The Kentucky Art and Craft Gallery in Louisville,KY) museums (Lehigh University Art Galleries), and the Alabama Clay Conference. I was a member of the IWCAT (International Workshop for the Ceramic Arts) in Tokoname, Japan in 2009. I also traveled around Japan before and after the IWCAT, including going up to Goshogawara in northern Japan and checking out the international workshop at the Tsugaru Kanayama pottery. My work has been in national shows, regional shows and local shows. I have done about three or four craft shows a year mostly in the southeast. I teach art (including ceramics) at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. I have been involved with wood firing since 1990 when I fired at Jack Troy's kiln in Pennsylvania. I did fire once with John Baymore in his noborigama kiln up in New Hampshire. Now I fire at the University of Montevallo (here in Alabama) in their large anagama about once or twice a year. I think that my experience, contacts( local national and international and my curiosity about ceramics will help me a lot as a board member.
