Distinguishing Liquid White Glaze From Transparent In Studio

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

Is there any way to add something to liquid clear glaze to color it slightly without any effects after firing? Food colorants or something? Has anyone tried it?

Newbies in Studio are often confuse white and clear glaze. Sometimes even with liquid white engobe.

Thanks!

Hahaha, so funny you mention this. I just had an issue, with a student project, from that very issue.

Years past, I just got a pink tinted clear. This year, I mistakenly got one that looks off white, which as you mentioned, looks like the white prior to firing.

Yes, you can add some food coloring, to tint the clear. The downside I found, was that any brush you used with the dyed clear, gets stained by the food coloring. Glaze performance isn't effected, in the slightest. I didn't dye all my clear, because of the staining issue. I kind of wish I would have now, as I have a student project, that has to be fixed, due to its white covering, not clear.

yep, add food coloring. it will burn out.  I use this in my raku clear glaze because its brushed on and it dries the same color as the clay and its easy to miss a spot.   One thing is that the food coloring kind of fades away after awhile .  i use red or pink because the green and blue can look like other glazes.  rakuku
