Manganese Dioxide

Hi everyone!

I have very many very vague questions about this glaze! I am a high school ceramics student and have a project to replicate a Lucie Rie piece. According to the website I found information about the piece on, the glaze is manganese but I don't know what transformation/variance of manganese it is. The glaze is a brownish purple hue that is a solid matte. Is there a specific name for this glaze? also, I am very worried by the comments that warn that manganese should not be used because of its toxic nature, especially for a relatively beginning ceramicist as myself. If I do use it, what precautions should I take? 92097-36-a.JPGThank you :)))

Many metallic looking glazes are created with Manganese. I won’t use it for most of the reasons mentioned above. If you read Johns post thoroughly above and took it seriously there are just too many unknowns for me. That said, it will be hard to duplicate but agree that testing a matte with iron probably is a good place to start.
