88usmc
I bought a used Speedball clay boss about a year ago. I am now having a problem where there is a whirring sound when I put any pressure on the clay while centering it, to including coning. I am only using 1 1/2 to 2 lbs of clay. I contacted Speedball (sent them a video). Their response was that the control board needs to be replaced. Doesn't seem to make sense to me. Before I shell out the ~$100 to get a new control board, I wanted to get some opinions. Thanks.
Pres
@88usmcSeems to me that your wheel has a pulley system, as do many wheels made today. Check to see if the belt is loose, and then refer to the owners manual to see if you can tighten the belt, or replace it. best, Pres Hulk
Hulk
On the wobble, is the wheel head not running true? Is it (the top - where the clay goes) moving side to side, up and down, or both, or are you referring to inconsistent speed? Edited September 30 by Hulk clarification, ok now? It was not centered on the pulley. I centered it on the pulley. The belt is not loose. But it still won’t center properly. It doesn’t seem that the belt needs to be replaced. Pres
Check it by trying to hold on to the wheel head while slowly toeing down the foot pedal. If it slips you need to tighten or replace. best, Pres
88usmc
The wheel is running true. The problem happens when I am centering the clay. There is a sound like the wheel is getting bogged down but I am only centering 1 1/2 to 2 lbs of clay. I can clearly see that goes in a slightly elliptical motion instead of a circular motion. I know it is not anything I am doing wrong because I know how to center clay.
neilestrick
Is the edge of the wheel running in an elliptical motion, or is the center not true? If the edge is off that doesn't matter. If the center is off then it's an issue. I think the only way the center can be off is if the bearing is slipping or if the shaft is bent. Does it make a sound like something is loose and slipping? Does it make a sound like something is loose and slipping? Thank you for your response. The wheel turns as it should, and the center is true. I spoke to a Speedball rep. She told me to make a very slight adjustment to the max knob on the control panel. She said if that doesn’t work then I need a new motor. She said that since there are no sounds when the wheel is turning that there is not a problem with the bearing. The only time I heard any sounds out of the ordinary is when I am applying pressure to center the clay. I will try the adjustment she recommended and hope that it works. 🤞🏽
Mark C.
None of the things speedball has said will affect the centering-they all affect the speed of wheelhead Pres
