Clay Stones (claystone?)- Good for Pottery?

Hi. I found a bunch of soft stones in the sand in a creek today in South Carolina, and i'm wondering if anyone could tell me more about their suitability for pottery.  They looked like typical creek stones, but they break easily and are soft and plastic. The outsides are orange or red on most of them, but the inside is usually more greyish brown, and sometimes pink. They certainly seem like pure clay to me- not granular at all, slippery and very moldable.  Is anyone familiar with this type of thing?
