Raku slip starting with kiln wash

Recommended Posts

Usually kiln wash contains a fair amount of Alumina so I would think at Raku temps it ain’t melting. Regardless of what it contains, I am thinking it doesn’t melt at cone 10 so for Raku, not likely. Not sure you could come up with a decent add without putting this in some glaze calc or progressively testing and adding Boron till it melted as a glaze.

I read in Daniel Rhodes book Kilns about the ingredients although I suspected that there was alumina.  I have about 20 pounds of kiln wash but don’t know what to flux it with.  I also have some boraxo, a boron compound.  Google says that melts at 743 C. Also called disodium tetraborate.  What would be a good percentage to start testing?
