smesa
Hey all! Just wondering if it’s ok to put a cracked vase into a glaze firing. It cracked in the bisque firing due to the unfortunate explosion of another piece. I don’t plan on using it to hold water but love the form, is there any big hazard in glazing and firing it? Its a long but skinny crack. Will the crack expand? Can it explode..? thank you all
liambesaw
It'll get bigger in the glaze firing from my experience.
Bill Kielb
Almost with certainty as the clay shrinks more. The crack will get bigger that is
Callie Beller Diesel
The crack will expand, but you’re past any danger of things exploding. That part only happens when there’s still water in the green ware and it escapes too rapidly.
kristinanoel
I'm of the opinion that sometimes a crack can make a decorative piece more interesting! Word of warning: if you have runny glaze, be sure to put something underneath it to protect your shelves and other ware, some glazes really run.
