Haddie cantrall
I'm looking into purchasing this kiln but am concerned about its condition. The seller says it's a even heat model, roughly ten yrs old, and in working order. She’s asking $500. I’ve never seen a kiln with a outer casing like the one in the photos she posted, and am wondering if this is a good kiln to buy?
neilestrick
Hmmm. That's an odd one. It has parts that look like Evenheat parts, but I've never seen one that doesn't have an outer metal jacket encasing the whole kiln. I'm thinking someone may have replaced the outer jacket with the strapping at some point. Without the outer jacket it's not going to be nearly as durable. I'd send a pic off to Evenheat, include the serial number, and see what they say. Post a pic of the serial plate here if you can. I would also bet that it's not just ten years old. In addition to the unknowns, it's not going to be a very easy to use kiln. For starters, it just has on/off switches for each element. They'll work fine, but it's difficult to heat the kiln slowly with those, as each element is either full on or off. Low-med-hi switches give you a lot more control. Second, it doesn't have a Kiln Sitter, which means you'll have to babysit the kiln and use witness cones for every firing and shut the kiln off yourself when it reaches temp. Combined with a digital pyrometer for watching the temp climb it'll work just fine, but it may be more work than you want to do. If you add the outer jacket and a wall mount digital controller it could be a decent kiln, but that's going to be a lot of work and added expense that will end up making this an $1800 kiln instead of $500. I wouldn't buy it, as there are too many issues that need addressing to make it a kiln that is durable and easy to use.
