Kiln wash flaking

I made a kiln wash of 50% EPK and 50% alumina hydrate and some of the wash is seriously flaking off the shelves. We sanded the surface of the old shelves, wiped them clean and then applied the wash with a brush.  Is it too thick, shelves damp?  Need some guidance

You want half the EPK to be calcined so it doesn't shrink as it dries.

Also thin layers.

Lee’s kiln wash is the only wash I know of that stays on like iron and does not flake off. The recipe is secret and way better than the 30 recipes I have tried. Much more costly than making your own though.

Wash is to thick and you need 1/2 the epk to be calcined. Then apply two thin coats drying 100% between coats . I like a paint roller and have it mixed to heavy cream consistency. I use a paint  roller drop in screen in a 5 gallon bucket.

you can still use what you have just add more of the right materials to make it whole

You can also add about 1% minspar 200 to the EPK/calcined EPK/alumina hydrate mix to have it adhere better without flaking.
