Duncan ES820-1 - 208V vs. 240V

Recommended Posts

Have an old Duncan ES-820-1, rated for 240V and 24 A. Only power available is 208V. It would seem that the elements would work 'OK' at 208V, but would not attain same temperatures as they would at 240V. Would controls work ? What would have to be changed out to get them to work ? Comments on whether this is feasible ?

If you are in a commercial location with only 208v available, the kiln rated for 240v will be about 15% underpowered, and thus will probably reach only bisque/low-fire earthenware temperatures. Mid-fire cone 6 is highly unlikely. The switches and controls will still work. What is not working are the elements. If you replace the elements with ones that are designed to give the full temperature from 208v, then you should be able to get cone 6 from it.

Dick is correct, it will not get to cone 6 on 208 volt service. So it will work for low fire work but that's it. An element change will fix the problem. However, you'll also need to find out what the max temp rating of the kiln is at 208 volts even with the new elements. If it's only rated to cone 6, then you would only be able to get to cone 6 about 30 times before the elements need to be changed. I would first call Paragon and see if they can give you any info, and see if they have elements. If not, then call Euclids and they'll be able to help you.
