kraythe
I am just a hobbyist potter but I have been wondering lately if there was a way I could make some stuff that is impossible to be slip casted and this must be hand made. All of my mugs and bowls could have been and I am looking for some more unique ideas. Suggestions?
liambesaw
A lot of 3d detail and undercuts are really too much work to cast realistically. Think of how molds are made and how pieces are cast. It's easy to find the limits of slipcasting if you do that.
neilestrick
I think that just about anything can be cast, it's just a matter of how many pieces the mold would require. At some point it just becomes too complex to be practical, even though it's possible. It's also possible to cast parts of a form individually, then join them after casting. Callie Beller Diesel
What I’m hearing you say is that you think your work is feeling a bit mechanical. Have you looked into some thrown and altered techniques from the videos here? My teachers used to harp on us that the wheel was a tool, and could be used to make pieces to assemble things with. Denice
Have you ever made a teapot, to me they are very challenging. You need to have all of the pieces thrown or pulled at the same time, they need a good design flow also. Your spout needs to pour well and you make the pot big enough to pour two cups of tea but not so big it is a challenge to lift and pour. Your handle needs to be part of the design and comfortable to use when pouring. Denice
