dsw
I have been given a bisqued porcelain plate to glaze fire - the base has been covered in a commercial underglaze, which i understand is a form of engobe. If that is the case do i need to use stilts on the base, or can i put it straight on the shelf? i am doing a porcelain midfire at cone 6 electric, Diane
bciskepottery
Generally, you should be fine. Some underglaze colors are more refractory than others . . . blues, for example with cobalt, and may leave a color ring on your kiln shelf. And, metal stilts do not perform well at cone 6. Babs
Place it on a biscuit of bisqued clay, a sprinkle of fine grog may save it sticking if it's refractory, this can be ground off after , If it is a plate it may warp if on stilts or spurs.
