Cavy Fire Studios
So...yeah. Fred's underfiring. I have no idea WHY this is happening or HOW, since the pyrometric cones have to be at a 90-degree angle before tripping, right? Sadly, mine are more like a clock's hands that say 9:08. Is it that I'm positioning the cone wrong? What could be causing this? :'(
bciskepottery
How long is the distance from your kiln to the electric circuit? In an earlier post, you mentioned using a heavy duty extension cord. You lose power the longer the distance it has to travel from the circuit box to the kiln. My guess is you are not getting full power due to distance.
neilestrick
Your sitter may need to be calibrated. Can you tell it's underfired by looking at the glaze, or just because the cone isn't bent right?

The power situation could prevent the kiln from reaching temperature, but if the cone is bending and the sitter is shutting it off, then the power is not an issue. Cavy Fire Studios
Ohhhhhhh...you know, you just might be right. It's about a 12ft cord--it was the cord that used to go directly into the power box in my old place, but was modified because the power box was 10ft further than the original cord could stretch. Agh geez... Whoops! Guess not. Neil, uh...how do I calibrate my sitter?

Cavy Fire Studios
Wow, thanks Mark! That was really helpful! (Though...geez, I NEVER fire that fast!)
neilestrick
Your 12 foot cord is fine. You need to get to distances much longer than that to cause a voltage drop.
GEP
Agree with the "calibration" suggestion. If you recently moved your kiln, the sitter may have been bumped out of calibration.
