Speckled buff and lime green leaf bowl/cup

From the album: Wheel Thrown Work, 2015
Again, one of my first wheel-thrown pieces. Made with Speckled Buff, I painted white slip into the inside of the bowl so the color would show true, then slip trailed a design on the outside in white slip. I was not prepared for the shrinkage! It still throws me off. But this would be a charming hot chocolate cup or great for dessert or ice cream.© Copyright Giselle Massey 2015 All Rights Reserved

This sponge holder is made with B-Mix clay. I slip trailed a design of mountains in red slip, then moon and stars in white. The whole piece was glazed in a lovely denim blue glaze that I borrowed from my dad's studio. I'm going to get my own pint.© Copyright Giselle Massey 2015 All Rights Reserved

I based this set of mugs on my set of four season tree stamps. Each will be glazed in two contrasting colors that reflect the season.© Giselle Massey, Giselle No. 5 Handmade, all rights reserved

The mug was a mistake. I lifted the clay too quickly while pinching too hard. I ended up with ridges and a slightly uneven rim. My first impulse was to throw it into the recycle bucket but there was something about it that I liked. I trimmed off the unevenness at the rim and threw a ripply bowl to match. The next day I added some intricate slip trailing and I can't tell you how glad I am that I kept them after all. These are two of my favorite things I've ever made.© Giselle Massey, Giselle No. 5 Handmade, all rights reserved

Slight hourglass shaped mug with an argyle design I first tried on a kleenex box cover. The original design had dots all over everything but the diamonds and by about halfway through I was really regretting it. This represents a compromise. I still put dots, but I put less and less as they reached the rim of the mug. I think this version is more striking and I wasn't cross-eyed when I finished. Win-win!© Giselle Massey, Giselle No. 5 Handmade, all rights reserved

I'm a very new beginner to wheel throwing. These two mugs were an attempt to throw the same shape twice with 1 lb. of clay. I was pretty happy with how they turned out! One has a sunrise scene slip trailed on and the other has a full day scene. They will be treated with iron oxide and glazed in different colors to reflect the time of day.© Giselle Massey, Giselle No. 5 Handmade, all rights reserved

I had drawn up this slip trailing design, then wanted to try it out on different shapes of mug to see which one I like best. The good news is, I really like the design. The bad news is, I still couldn't tell you which one I like better! The branch goes up from the bottom on one side of the handle and down from the top on the other side so no matter where you look at the mug you get a different view every time.© Giselle Massey, Giselle No. 5 Handmade, all rights reserved

My very first cream pitcher. Thrown in B-Mix clay from Laguna and decorated with slip trailing and stamped with one of my handmade flower stamps. I plan to glaze it in a creamy peach that will show white over the leaves and dots.© Giselle Massey, Giselle No. 5 Handmade, all rights reserved

One of my first wheel thrown latte cups. I made it in Laguna Hawaiian Red and decorated it with slip trailing ... the inside is also painted with white slip so I can use a vibrant color and have it show up true.© Giselle Massey, Giselle No. 5 Handmade, all rights reserved

This is my "country fair quilt" platter. I wanted to call to mind embroidered fabric with this serving plate. It's cast from a vintage mold using white stoneware slip, then decorated with innumerable dots. I love running my fingers over slip trailing after a piece is glazed.© Giselle Massey, Giselle No. 5 Handmade 2014
