From the album: Favorites
I love all the varied shapes a good mug comes in. The shape is my current favorite. It works well to separate the textured areas from the geometric sgraffito in the bottom. It has a pulled handle and commercial glazes and was fired to cone 6 electric. -

This is my very first platter or plate of any kind, although I have made a few pie plates. I actually intended this to be a pie plate but accidentally "stepped on the gas" just as I was finishing so the walls spun out almost flat. I decided it was a platter instead. I'm very happy with how this turned out. White stoneware, thrown on the pottery wheel, carved in a design of eucalyptus leaves in the wind. Glazed in Mayco's Stoned Denim at ^6 in an electric kiln. (Actually fired twice because the first time a cookie exploded and got shards everywhere.)© Giselle No. 5 Ceramics 2016, all rights reserved

Wheel thrown in buff stoneware with speckles. Carved with wildflowers and grass. Underglazed with Duncan Concepts Bright Kiwi. Interior glazed with Laguna Dynasty Red or Peach Blush. Flowers in Peach Blush, Dynasty Red, and Blackberry Wine. Exterior aside from flowers left raw, although I dipped the first couple inches of the top and the handle in Laguna Clear Bright. Nicer to touch and put your mouth against.© Giselle No. 5 Ceramics 2016, all rights reserved

Carved poppy tumbler in Slate Blue, Side B

This one has the addition of iron oxide on just the flowers, stems and leaves, but I felt like it added very little so I won't bother next time. The glaze on its' own has a lovely break and brings out the design beautifully.© Copyright 2015 Giselle Massey, all rights reserved

Carved poppy tumbler in Slate Blue, Side A

This is my carved poppy design with Stoned Denim by Spectrum instead of bringing out the poppies in a variety of bright underglazes and covering them with clear. A friend requested a mug in this color so I wanted to try it out on the little tumbler first to make sure the design showed up. It's a lot more subtle than the bright colors against cream but I really like it anyway. This is just plain carved and glazed straight; the other one has iron oxide on the flowers, but it really doesn't make a noticeable difference (I wouldn't have seen it unless I already knew) so I'm going to skip the extra step next time.© Copyright 2015 Giselle Massey, all rights reserved

Icelandic Poppies Utensil Holder/Large Vase

Thrown in B-Mix. I carved the poppies then applied Duncan's Bright Kiwi to the stems and leaves, their Light Pink to some flowers, and a mix of their Bright Pink and Light Saffron to get peach. The yellow is Laguna's Yemen Yellow Engobe, and some of the poppies are done in a thin layer of Dynasty Red so it shows up lightly and doesn't overpower the pastels. Interior and top is glazed in Laguna's Peach Blush and exterior has one of their clear glazes. I really, truly loved how this one came out. It's for once even better than I imagined.© Copyright Giselle No. 5 Ceramics (Giselle Massey) 2015, all rights reserved

This one is bright and fun. I made with the same technique as the other poppy vase, but since it was so tiny it was very little trouble. Interior is glazed in Laguna's Dynasty Red.© Copyright Giselle No. 5 Ceramics (Giselle Massey) 2015, all rights reserved

Wheel thrown in Speckled Buff. I then carved wildflowers and applied Duncan Bright Kiwi underglaze to the grass and stems. After bisque firing I glazed the inside in Laguna's Dynasty Red, the flowers in their Blackberry Wine and Peach Blush with streaks of the red. All over is clear. This was the first thing that sold on the first day of my Open Studio show.© Copyright Giselle No. 5 Ceramics (Giselle Massey) 2015, all rights reserved
