      I use advancers in my gas kilns for past 30 years.

      They do not like thermo shock .

      If I where you I would ask this question on one of the wood kiln firing sites.

      Most wood folks I know use thick heavy shelves

      -I use in my salt kiln for example the 1 inch thick 33 pounds per shelve (for a 12x24) dry pressed English high alumina shelves

      wood firing is hard the older you get-all pottery is that way really-My 8 tons a year is hard on me at 68 yaers old
